ABOUT THE AUTHOR
James A, Swan, Ph.D. began hunting and shooting archery before age 10. At the University of Michigan he played intercollegiate football, was leading scorer on the l964 rugby team, and earned a Ph.D. in environmental psychology in l969. He has taught at the Universities of Michigan, Western Washington State, Oregon and Washington and currently is a Research Adjunct at the Institute for Transpersonal Psychology. James began his study of sports psychology at the Esalen Sports Center in the early l970's. For a decade he was a counselor in private practice, working with many world-class athletes in a wide variety of sports. In l975, while at the University of Oregon, he produced a major symposium on the psychology of sports performance which drew 1000 and included a 5000-person Professional Track Association meet. An acclaimed documentary film, "Extraordinary Powers," by Michael Wiese was made about this symposium.
James is the author of seven books including In Defense of Hunting and The Sacred Art of Hunting; a columnist for National Review Online and ESPNOutdoors.com, and a writer for Engel’s Outdoor Experience and Bushnell’s Secrets of the Hunt on the Outdoor Channel. He is also an actor and has appeared in over 20 commercials and print ads, and a dozen movies including "Murder In The First," and "Star Trek: First Contact," as well as "Midnight Caller," "Donahue," "Good Morning America," "Sightings," "Ancient Mysteries," and "Modern Marvels" TV series. He is a California Hunter Education Instructor and a Bowhunter Education Instructor.
